What moves the price most
Cabinets are usually the largest single line in a kitchen budget. Stock, semi-custom and fully custom cabinets differ widely in price, and the number of boxes matters as much as the door style.
Layout changes come next. Keeping the sink, range and refrigerator where they are keeps plumbing, gas and electrical work small. Moving them, or removing a wall and adding a support beam, adds structural work, permits and time.
Countertop material, flooring that has to run under new cabinets, and the amount of tile all add up after that. Appliances are normally purchased separately by the homeowner.
Ways to control the budget
Keep the existing layout if it works. Spend on the things you touch every day, such as drawers, hardware and countertops, and save on things you do not. If you are supplying your own cabinets or materials, tell us up front. We install customer-supplied cabinets and materials and will bid the labor accordingly.
Decide your selections before work starts. Changes made after cabinets are ordered are the most common reason a kitchen goes over budget.
How long it takes
Most kitchen remodels take 2 to 6 weeks of on-site work, depending on scope. Cabinet and countertop lead times are separate from that and are often the longest part of the wait, so order early.
