The short answer
Most of our bathroom remodels take 1 to 3 weeks of on-site work. A simple update sits at the short end. A full gut with a custom tile shower sits at the long end. Bathroom remodels start at $12,500.
The order of work
Demolition comes first, and it is when surprises show up: old leaks, soft subfloor or plumbing that is not where anyone expected. Next is rough plumbing and electrical, then any framing changes for a niche, bench or larger shower.
Backer board and waterproofing follow. This stage is not visible when the job is done, and it decides whether the shower lasts. After waterproofing comes tile, then grout, then the vanity, countertop, fixtures, glass, paint and trim.
What causes delays
Materials that have not arrived are the most common cause. Special-order tile, vanities and shower glass can take weeks, so we recommend having selections made and ordered before demolition starts.
Hidden damage is the second. Water damage behind an old tub surround has to be repaired before anything new goes over it. Inspections, where a permit is required, can also add a day or two between stages.
Living without the bathroom
If it is your only bathroom, tell us at the estimate. The schedule can be planned to keep the toilet usable for as much of the job as possible.
